Telehealth · Minnesota

Online therapy in Minnesota, no winter drive required.

Erin L. Smith, MSPC, LPCC, LPC is licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Minnesota, so anyone physically in Minnesota can meet with her by telehealth. Sessions happen on a screen, from a room you choose, which means a snowstorm or an icy road does not have to take away the hour you set aside for yourself. The practice is based in Kentucky, one time zone to the east.

01Minnesota telehealth

A Minnesota license, a telehealth practice

Erin's Minnesota LPC license lets her work with people who are in Minnesota at the time of their session. There is no Minnesota office, so every session is telehealth. Eligibility depends on your physical location during the hour, not your home address or where your plan is based. If you live in Minnesota and are home for your sessions, you are covered. If you are traveling, check first: Erin's three states are Kentucky, Arizona and Minnesota.

02Minnesota telehealth

Weather and the hour you protect

Anyone who has lived through a Minnesota winter knows how easily an appointment across town turns into a cancellation. Unplowed side streets, black ice and early darkness all argue for staying home. Telehealth lets you keep the hour without the drive. You still need a few things on your side: a private room, a steady connection, a charged device and ideally headphones. Showing up week after week is often what lets the work build, and removing the commute makes that easier.

03Minnesota telehealth

One time zone apart

Minnesota is on Central time, and the practice's office in Georgetown, Kentucky, is on Eastern time, one hour ahead. Both states change their clocks for daylight saving time, so the one-hour gap holds steady all year. Even so, read the time zone on your booking confirmation from the secure SimplePractice client portal, and make sure your own calendar shows the session at your local time. A quick look when you book prevents logging on an hour early or an hour late.

04Minnesota telehealth

For first responders in Minnesota

First responders are a real focus of this practice, and telehealth suits the work. If you are in police, fire, EMS, dispatch or emergency medicine, you can talk in the language you actually use. Erin has no reporting line to your department, and because sessions happen online, nobody from your town sees you in a lobby. Cumulative exposure, sleep broken by shift work, a temper or a drinking habit that crept up: all of these are reasons people start, and none of them disqualify you.

05Minnesota telehealth

Insurance, and the months in Arizona

In Minnesota, Erin is in-network with Anthem BCBS, United Healthcare and UMR; the Aetna, Humana and Medicare plans on her list are for Kentucky only. Self-pay is welcome at $150 for a 60-minute session. Some Minnesotans spend the coldest months in Arizona, and Erin is licensed there too, so sessions can follow you south and back as long as you are in one of her states when you meet. Bring your travel calendar to the free consultation and map out a rhythm together.

Questions

Common questions

Is Erin licensed to see clients in Minnesota?
Yes. Erin holds a Licensed Professional Counselor license in Minnesota, and Minnesota clients meet with her by telehealth. During each session you need to be physically in Minnesota, or in Arizona or Kentucky, where she is also licensed.
What happens if I travel during the winter?
If you will be in Arizona or Kentucky, where Erin also holds licenses, telehealth sessions can usually continue. If you are headed somewhere else, talk with her before you go, since a counselor can only see you in a state where they are licensed.

In Erin's words

What she would say if you called today.

From Minnesota, the screen becomes our room. I will still put the relationship first, ask what you want to be different, and check in honestly about how it is going. You set the pace, and I will tell you what I am using and why.
